Silent Friendship
I’ve never spoken to my older brother.
He’s my best friend in this world.
We play patty cake. He laughs at all my goofy faces, even when everyone else thinks I’m ridiculous. My favorite moments with him are spent hugging or yelling with laughter. He’s the greatest audience for my terrible jokes and terrible singing, because I know no matter what I’ll see a smile.
Louie was born 31 years ago into a time when children born with severe developmental and physical delays were a terrifying anomaly for parents. Doctors told my mother to put this newborn baby away in a care facility and forget all about her son, because a single mother couldn’t handle his needs.
She told them they could stuff it, and proudly raised my brother on her own.
