International news company, Reuters, has decided to end user comments on news stories on their website, claiming that the discussion of articles happens mainly on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. This announcement came Friday, November 7th on the Editor’s Note page of the Reuters website. Disabling comments has always been a big debate, are companies taking away the voice of their audience? Do they care what their consumers think? Reuters says they believe Facebook and Twitter are better places to have discussions since the majority of their readers are on one or the other. The thing is, they’re moving the comments away from their content.
Will Reuters still be policing their comments? Nope.
